Project Title: Old Tweed Bridge refurbishment

Client: Amey Highways

Value: £2.4 million

Description: Full refurbishment of the existing bridge structure and supporting wingwalls.

The works involved:

  • The design of a support system braced from the rock level within the river Tweed to support the required loadings to the working scaffold.
  • The main structure excavated down to top of arch level with the stone being dismantled at the same time.
  • All stonework removed was tagged to ensure it was rebuilt to the same location.
  • New foundations where installed to sections of the wingwalls.
  • The structure was re-built using the existing and approved replacement stone attached to internal blocked faced walls with other all voids filled with foam concrete up to structural slab level.
  • Feature stones were also built into from their service ducts, road kerbs and new surfacing materials where applied to finished levels.
  • The diversion of existing HV cables that were re-routed to permanent location under the river on the downstream side of the structure.
